Diego Pena : From Large Aromatic Molecules to Graphene Materials (IRSAMC - 16 avril 2018)

olycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic compounds ubiquitous in nature, composed by the fusion of several aromatic rings. Our group at CiQUS is specialized on the synthesis of large PAHs by solution chemistry. In recent years, we have used these molecules to address some long-standing scientific challenges. In this talk I will provide an overview of our work in the interface between organic chemistry and surface science. In particular, I will focus on the generation of highly reactive molecules (Fig. 1A) [1], the molecular characterization of heavy petroleum fractions (Fig. 1B) [2], the synthesis of exotic nanographenes (Fig. 1C) [3], and the on-surface preparation of large acenes (Fig. 1D) [4] and graphene nanoribbons [5].
